I went along a river footpath on Sunday morning, and spent over an hour filling two bags with litter (and that wasn’t everything, as some items were unreachable). All just on one short stretch. This is the new reality, born of waste, disposable junkfood, and a lack of respect for nature. If only the McDonalds/Costa/Burger King/Starbucks/KFC etc got fined every time their disposable packaging was dumped, there’d be more than enough money to fund the NHS, social support, and public transport.
People: don’t support US junkfood and takeaway companies. Support your local independent cafes, and eat in. Or just cook at home.
Tax the rich. Fine the polluters.
There was also a surprising amount of dog poo in plastic bags. I can’t understand how stupid some people are. The whole point of a bag is to pick it up and dispose of it properly in a bin, not to throw it into a growing pile.
I climbed over the wall a few times to get to some items, scrambled up slopes, and even once into the river to collect some plastic sheets trapped against branches where the heron likes to stand.
I also had a letter published in my local paper this week:
By the way, if you want to support me you can take a paid sub to my writing blog, or buy my books in print or ebook format.
We have the same problem here too (Scottish Highlands).
