Yesterday I received an email from someone. The subject was “What you were saying should happen”. And it linked to news that Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana are forming a new political party.
First, Zarah’s announcement:
Now Jeremy’s:
I sat nodding at both announcements. I then emailed them both as follows.
Dear Zarah and Jeremy,
I read about the new party that is being formed by you both. This is wonderful news. I’ve been saying for a long time it needed to happen. Apart from Greens, the only others I’d vote for would have been individuals like you two. There’s no difference between red or blue in the UK or US any more, and we need true socialism for people and the planet. We need options people can vote for, and this is exactly what was needed to progress in fighting back against bought and self-interested politicians working for the rich.
The one thing I would ask is that you work with the Greens. They are anti-genocide, pro-people. They voted against the proscription of PA as well. In many cases the same people who would vote for Greens would vote for your new party, and vice versa. I stood as a Green MP in Wales in the last election (paper candidate, no expectation of winning, I just did it to help them out); I'd never have voted for hateful Starmer, but if Labour had been led by either of you, I would have been torn between you and Greens.
Therefore if your party and Greens both stood in the same constituency it would split many of the votes, and perhaps leave the door open for some arsehole to get in from another party. The strongest position would be that for each constituency there is either a Green or one from your party, and people are encouraged to vote for whichever is standing. Up to the parties how you decided how many stand and where, but there's no point competing against each other when you are likely to be in at least 90% agreement on most topics.
The enemy is powerful and any left parties need to work together, not fight. Then there’s hope of actually getting a majority of good people into Parliament and repairing some of the (mostly) broken system. Please consider this. I know I’d vote for your party if there was no Green in my area; I’d hate to have to choose between you.
I'll be sending this to Greens and Scottish Greens as well.
Exciting times. Bright blessings for a more hopeful future.
Best wishes,

Amidst all the darkness in the news, I find this to contain some hope.
Update: also a Scottish version?
PS I’m also an author. You can buy my books, or subscribe to my newsletter. I would be grateful for either. :-)
Excellent news, we need to build a progressive left alliance.
