This week has been all about paperwork, as I mentioned recently. And it’s one of so many demands on my time that it is hard to fit it all in. I am self-employed (I’ll do a post about that one time, as I am an author and creative writing teacher/mentor), and I also work part-time as a cinema projectionist to make ends meet. I love both jobs, but that doesn’t pay the bills. (I contacted the utilities companies and asked, but they said no, love isn’t legal tender, since it doesn’t make the shareholders rich enough.)
So I was working today, showing The Greatest Showman for a girl’s 11th birthday party. So much noise! So much mess to clean up in the cinema afterwards! But they all had a good time. Yes, I work at weekends, and also evenings – I’l be back in the cinema tomorrow night.
When I got home today I cooked a meal (fried garlic mushrooms and pasta) then joined in a video chat with my Green Party in North-West Wales. It was really good, because not only was it a chance to go over paperwork and discuss some possibilities for when it is all out of the way – such as crowdfunders, hustings and flyers – but it was also a chance for me to thank people who give so much of their time, just because they believe in the cause. There’s no payment, no rewards, no backhanders, no promises of getting a cushy payout of £350 a week and expenses for sleeping in the House of Lords. So even a brief chat where the work we all put in can be acknowledged is important sometimes. None of us are doing this for our own gain, we’re doing it to give people options. Options that aren’t based on greed, inequality, division and violence. Options for a better world.
So please remember to thank those who help you, every day. Friends, loved ones, family, strangers. None of us can do this alone.
