And that word was: “Congratulations”.
I get a lot of emails with the subject line “congratulations”. Some of them are from fans, concerning a writing achievement (a great review of one of my books, or the release of my latest novel). Some of them are spam (“Congratulations! You’ve won a million pounds! Just CLICK HERE!”).
(Top tip: don’t ever CLICK HERE.)
This one was neither.
“Congratulations Karl. You have been selected as the Green Party general election candidate for Dwyfor Meirionnydd.”
And that is where this tale begins.
Except, it isn’t the start of the story. Stories always begin earlier in terms of chronological events. But the tale, well, that’s a different matter. A good novel begins at the inciting incident. The point where life goes onto a new course (at least temporarily), and may never be the same again.
In later posts I’ll write about why I’m doing this. The urgent need for change. For new policies and ideas. To get rid of warmongers and environment destroyers and supporters of inequality. (I have no delusions about achieving that, but only endeavours begun with passion are likely to achieve anything at all.)
I’ll write about the internal hustings event, and my anecdote about providing the only Green Party vote for my area over thirty years ago (I checked on Ceefax and knew that one vote was my own).
I’ll write about how Dwyfor Meirionnydd inspired some of my stories, and the ways it brought my family together. The time my family could have died in an estuary near Harlech, when I carried them through raging waters to dry land.
I will write more.
Words are communication. Communications are ideas. Ideas are elementals whose plane is letters, their means of birth and transit from one mind to another.
I will write more.
I hope some people will join me.

Disclaimer.
Congratulations and good luck in painting Dwyfor Meirionnydd a nice shade of Green (or at least adding a few green spots).
The sea around Harlech is MAD!
