Yesterday (Wednesday 15th May 2024), marked Nakba Day, commemorating the premeditated ethnic cleansing by Zionist forces of 750,000 Palestinians from their homeland in 1947/8 – a process which has continued ever since.
For 76 years, Israel’s settler-colonial project has fragmented the Palestinian people by geography and legal status, denied Palestinian refugees their right to return to their lands, and has entrenched a regime of control that systematically discriminates against Palestinians in all aspects of life. Israel’s current genocide is built on the foundations of this project.
Palestinians in Gaza, the majority of whom are refugees from Israel’s previous rounds of ethnic cleansing, face another Nakba. They are experiencing genocide and the real threat of expulsion from their country. Across the occupied West Bank, Palestinians are facing down a wave of military invasions, assassinations and settler attacks to drive them from their lands and homes.
Of course, you won’t find that summary in mainstream media, or on the BBC, or coming from the mouths of any politician or celebrity who is pro-war, racist, bribed, or any other reasons that might lead them to seeing Palestinian lives as having no value. Mainstream media instead prefers to repeat the lie that the past doesn’t exist, and history began on October 7th 2023. As a way of providing some context, here’s one summary of the background.
I want a future where humans live at peace with each other. Jews, muslims, atheists, pagans, Christians, and every other belief system. There are many good people campaigning for justice for all, and opposing those who support colonisation and violence. In fact, I’m grateful to all the people who took the time to educate me, including my Jewish friends, who face even greater personal issues when they speak out against Israel’s actions. It was their example which led me to join Jewish Voice for Peace, a worthy organisation I recommend supporting.
